Why Honors Courses?

The Golden West Honors Program is designed for students committed to the pursuit of excellence. With a core of dedicated faculty, Golden West College offers the opportunity for a rigorous academic experience. So if you’d like to immerse yourself in works by great thinkers and then discuss them with your fellow great thinkers, this course of study may be just what you’re looking for.

The Program is characterized by a rich variety of learning approaches—seminars, guest speakers, field trips, internships, tapes, films, dramas, computer applications, group projects, student presentations.

In all our courses we stress critical thinking: the alert, objective use of reason in critical inquiry and assessment of evidence. We also foster imagination and flexibility in problem-solving, while helping you adapt to new information and technologies. Also, through the service component of the Honors Seminar, we encourage you to give something back to the life of our community.

Humanities 190H, the Honors Seminar, is the heart of our program. We encourage you to take it your first semester, along with English 100H, Honors Introduction to Composition. This multi-disciplinary class will inform you about the nature and expectations of the Program, as well as introduce you to the elements of critical thinking so important in all Honors classes. In addition, you will receive credit for participating in our service learning component.

For those willing to commit themselves wholeheartedly to the academic life, this program offers an exceptional opportunity. By becoming part of a vital, innovative learning community, you’ll give yourself the chance to help shape the Program as well as share in a fulfilling academic and human experience. And you’ll be working with professors dedicated to your growth.

If you’re a qualified student, eager to challenge yourself through full involvement in the Program, we welcome you. And you need not join the complete Program to participate in the classes. We also welcome qualified students wishing to enroll in only one or two Honors classes of particular interest.
